The battery for your electric lift truck is designed to give you power for 5 years or longer.

The maintenance is easy if you have the proper knowledge. Flooded Lead Acid batteries are still the most reliable and most environmentally friendly power sources available. Your battery is almost 100% recyclable. Lead and Copper go to secondary smelters. Plastic is recycled and even the acid is separated and refined to later be used in fertilizers, cleaners, and purifiers in alkali based materials.

Your battery has a life cycle. The life cycle is based on usage (energy out) and charge (energy in). One discharge and subsequent complete charge constitutes one cycle. Therefore, if you fully discharge and recharge your battery every day the life cycle of your battery is approx. 5 years. (1,500 cycles / 300 working days a year.) Every situation varies and the 1,500 cycle measurement is not absolute. Once 1,200 to 1,500 cycles is [...]

It doesn’t take long for corrosion to ruin a good battery. As if the battery doesn’t have a rough life to begin with. There are several reasons these batteries failed. Externally they are corroded and don’t look pretty.

Internally, all of the chemicals necessary to create energy are now on the outside of the battery. It’s on the battery surface, the forklift, the floor, the operator and hopefully no on the products that your company makes. Yes, these batteries range in price from $3,000.00 to $12,000.00. They have not survived the warranty period.

Each of these customers have had to replace these batteries with either new or used units. However, in every case the outcome will be virtually the same. Premature battery failure due to improper maintenance. The customer must deal with the issue in many ways:

Receiving the Battery:

Upon receiving the battery inspect the battery immediately for any signs of damage that might have occurred while in transit.  Look for broken or missing blocking boards that keep it upright and prevent it from shifting on the pallet.  Broken or missing boards may indicate that the battery may have tipped over and a closer inspection should be performed.  Wet spots on the top and the sides of the battery generally indicate that the battery has been tipped over and there may be some electrolyte loss and internal damage.  Any damage or electrolyte loss should only be corrected by a qualified battery repair person.  Contact your servicing dealer as soon as possible.

Important!

Upon receiving the battery make sure that if there is evidence that the battery was damaged in transit be sure to make note of it on the shipping papers.  Keep in mind that if you sign the papers receiving [...]

forklift planned maintenance

Your forklift works hard, and you should want to keep it working hard for as long as it can. This is why planned maintenance can be so important. Planned maintenance (PM) isn’t just for the forklift, it’s for you! When you use PM for your forklift, there are many benefits. Just to be sure, I asked some of our Toyota Certified Technicians.

  • Planned maintenance helps prevent avoidable breakdowns!
    • When you are regularly scheduling maintenance for your forklift, it may lead to early detection of a potential maintenance need, offering peace of mind.  PM makes sure that you are getting that inspection and catching potential problems. It is better to catch these small issues with a PM program than it is to catch them after they have already become a larger issue.
  • Planned maintenance actually saves you money!
    • One of the most expensive costs associated with owning a forklift is downtime. When you’re forklifts not working, that takes [...]

It’s the start of the summer – the busy, hot, productive season. During these 3 -4 months its important to pay attention to the health and safety of your material handlers; from your human operators to the equipment doing the heavy lifting. I spoke with the experts at PennWest, who gave me a run down on the top 5 ways that you can maximize your business in the summer.

Top 5 Ways to Maximize Your Material Handling in the Summer Months
  1. Get your Operators trained – Not all forklifts operate the same way, and with new hires during the busy season, it’s easy to [...]
